Program of Study

The Minor in Green Chemistry focuses on sustainable chemical practices that minimize or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Emphasizing innovation and environmental stewardship, the minor integrates principles of chemistry, sustainability, and interdisciplinary collaboration to foster the design of safer, more efficient chemical products and processes. Students will explore strategies for waste prevention and hazard reduction through sustainable molecular design. This proactive approach equips students with the tools to address environmental challenges at the design phase, promoting solutions that benefit human health and the environment. Students completing the Green Chemistry Minor will be prepared for careers in fields such as sustainable manufacturing, environmental consulting, green product design, and regulatory affairs, as well as for advanced study in chemistry, materials science, and environmental engineering. The minor also aligns with global initiatives for sustainability, offering opportunities to contribute to a more sustainable future through innovative chemical solutions.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Green Chemistry Minor, students will be able to:

  1. Employ scientific inquiry and modern instrumentation in the design, performance, documentation, and quantitative interpretation of laboratory experiments at a level suitable for a career in industry or entry into a graduate program.
  2. Retrieve and evaluate chemical information from the chemistry literature and communicate this information in written, oral and electronic formats using appropriate scientific language to both experts and the general public.
  3. Identify and assess molecular hazards, the impact of chemicals on human health and the environment, and describe the fundamental principles of green chemistry.

Special Conditions

Each course counted toward the minor must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better. Only six (6) units of upper-division courses may be double-counted for the minor and a student’s major. Students are advised that some courses have prerequisites, and should plan accordingly.

Students with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Green Chemistry may not double-count CHEM 360  and CHEM 361  for both the major and minor.

Total (25-27 Units)
