Program of Study

The Chemistry Minor at California State University, San Marcos provides students with a solid foundation in the principles of chemical science, laboratory techniques, and scientific reasoning. This program is ideal for students majoring in related disciplines, such as biology, physics, environmental science, or engineering, who wish to strengthen their understanding of chemical concepts and experimental methods.
Students complete a sequence of lower-division courses in general and organic chemistry, including associated laboratory experiences, followed by upper-division electives that allow for exploration of specialized topics such as environmental chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, or advanced organic synthesis. Through hands-on laboratory work and critical analysis, students gain skills applicable to research, education, healthcare, industry, and environmental fields.
The Chemistry Minor consists of 28-29 units, including at least six (6) units distinct from the student’s major or other minors. All coursework must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher. Students benefit from small class sizes, modern facilities, and access to experienced faculty mentors who support their academic and professional development in the chemical sciences.

Note:

Biochemistry majors may not minor in Chemistry.
