Data Science Minor

Program of Study

Data science is concerned with drawing useful and valid conclusions from data. Data scientists use computational and statistical methods and tools to explore and analyze data and develop models to make predictions based on data. They ask appropriate questions about data and interpret the predictions based on their expertise of the subject domain.

The Minor in Data Science at CSUSM aims to provide students with practical knowledge of the methods and techniques of data analysis, as well as the ability to think critically about the construction and implications of data analysis and models. The minor will empower students across disciplines with a working knowledge of data science knowledge, techniques and tools that allow students not only to participate in data science projects, but to design and carry out practical computational and inferential analysis for their field of interest.

The minor requires completion of six courses (at least 18 units): four core courses and two electives. Each course counted toward the minor must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better. At least six units counted toward the minor cannot be double counted toward the major.

Electives (6-10 Units)

Students may choose any two (2) courses from the following list, totaling a minimum of six (6) Elective units.
Suggested Course Pathways can be found at www.csusm.edu/cs/.
Courses used in the Core coursework may not also be used for the Elective coursework. Other courses may be approved with consent of the Computer Science & Information Systems faculty advisor.
