Kinesiology, Health Science Option, B.S.*

Program of Study


Kinesiology, the study of human movement, integrates the biological, physical, behavioral and social sciences in the study of physical activity and sport, and their effect on fitness and quality of life of people across the lifespan. The Kinesiology program at California State University San Marcos is a comprehensive program of study offered in support of the Surgeon General’s “Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity,” and Healthy People 2020.

Program Student Learning Outcomes


Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology will:

  1. Apply the scientific process in exercise physiology.
  2. Design and instruct appropriate content and teaching progressions related to human movement concepts and skill themes.
  3. Design exercises to improve strength and flexibility.
  4. Explain application of health behavior theories and research methods to address Health Science issues.

Career and Educational Opportunities


The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology is intended to prepare students for careers in areas such as physical education, exercise physiology, rehabilitation, athletic training, corporate wellness, coaching, wellness coaching, and personal training. With an emphasis on rehabilitation and chronic disease, the major is also excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue advanced degrees in physical education, kinesiology, medicine, physical/occupational therapy, nursing, public health, and more.

Special Conditions for the Kinesiology Major


With the exception of KINE 495A  (A-C), KINE 496A  (A-C), KINE 497 , and KINE 499A  (A-F), and the KINE 100-level activity course in the Core Requirements, all courses counted toward the major, including Preparation for the Major, must be completed with a C (2.0) or better.

*Nine to twelve (9-12) units of lower-division General Education units in Area B (Mathematics and Science), and E (Lifelong Learning and Information Literacy) may be automatically satisfied by courses taken in the Preparation for the Major and Major Requirements.

Advanced Study (3-4) Units


Students may select any Kinesiology course that is 400-level or above that they have not already taken to fulfill another requirement.  Recommended courses include:
