LING 381 - Language and GenderUnits: 3 Gender roles are dynamic, yet culturally bound. They are determined as a group, yet performed by individuals. These roles are products of historical, sociological, geographic, economic, and linguistic phenomena. All of these contribute to the development of a culture, and all are encoded and reflected in the language used. Students will discover how these phenomena work together in the social contexts of various cultures, with a particular focus on the role language plays in creating and reporting gender roles.
