Seven (7) lower-division semester units, which includes one (1) semester unit allocated for a laboratory.
One course in each area. One of the two courses must be associated with a one-semester-unit laboratory.
The Physical and Biological Sciences requirement provides students with a robust foundation in the fundamental principles governing the natural world. Through experimentation, logical reasoning, and mathematical analysis, students will apply these principles to novel situations and real-world applications. Students will explore the historical and contemporary interplay between science and society, developing the skills to effectively communicate scientific concepts and their relevance to complex, real-world problems.
Students with physical and/or biological sciences courses in their major/minor should refer to their Degree Planner or consult with an advisor to determine which course is appropriate for their degree program.

Check the Class Schedule or Degree Planner for the most up-to-date list of courses satisfying this requirement..
Subject Area 5C: Laboratory
The laboratory must support learning by exposing students to scientific inquiry, the empirical nature of science, and hands-on experiences in any instructional modality.
Subject Area 5A and 5B courses with an embedded laboratory (5C) may be used to meet the laboratory requirement as long as the minimum unit value of 7 units is met for Subject Area 5.
GEOG 110L
GES 110
^CHEM 101, which is a course to prepare students for CHEM 105 and CHEM 150, will count as a Subject Area 5A course for students who do not continue on to take either CHEM 105 or CHEM 150.
