Subject Area 1A: English Composition (3 units)
Students will learn to write clearly and effectively, transforming complex ideas and feelings into well-structured prose. Through their coursework, students will master the writing process and understand various forms of academic writing, develop strong analytical and creative skills, advanced reading abilities, and sophisticated rhetorical techniques appropriate for university-level work.

Subject Area 1B: Critical Thinking (3 units)
Students will develop critical thinking skills by learning logic and reasoning, including how to analyze the validity of statements and arguments, construct sound arguments, and understand the relationship between language and logic. Students will cultivate open-mindedness, impartiality, the ability to suspend judgment or take a justified stance, and self-reflection. Students will also learn to recognize the complexity of real-world problems and the limitations of simplistic solutions. These transferable skills will be applicable across academic disciplines and in everyday life.

Subject Area 1C: Oral Communication (3 units)
Students will explore the psychological and social significance of public communication in a free society. Students will develop proficiency in composing and delivering extemporaneous presentations on challenging social and intellectual topics. Students will examine diverse speaking styles and forms of expression representing various cultural perspectives and identities. Students will engage with these complex issues through speaking and active listening, developing ethical public speaking skills, respect for freedom of expression, and a confident, authentic public voice.
