How to Read Plato

Plato’s dialogues are among the most important writings in Western culture. They can be read as intimidating treatises on philosophical topics or they can be read as literature, with an emphasis on characters, irony and metaphor. Socrates is, himself, not just a spokesman for Plato’s ideas, but a representative of philosophical behavior in a society that values political flummery over the sincere pursuit of reason and truth. The relevance of this topic to the November elections can hardly be overemphasized.

A Physician’s Journey From Ancient Egypt to Today: How Diseases Transformed History

The seeds of modern medicine were planted in Egypt more than 7,000 years ago, cultivated during the Renaissance, and brought to full bloom in the 20th century. Some of the most feared infectious diseases were still present when gold was discovered in California, and many of them had already altered the course of human history.
