The Subtle and Luminous World of Pastels: Color and Light

Create original and colorful works of art while improving your technique and color mixing skills. Pick a subject of your choice, or choose one provided from still lives, scenery, animals, figure and portrait, or abstraction to cover basic art principles and composition. Practice the surprising but successful techniques used by great pastel masters that continue to provide them recognition to this day.

Art Appreciation: Through the Artist’s Eye

From classic, eclectic, traditional and contemporary, explore the world of creation in its various forms, including 2-D and 3-D art, architecture, fiber arts and more. The goal of this course is to make you well-versed in the art of appreciation and ultimately to enrich your life. This course will incorporate demonstrations, guest artists, films and six exhibit trips. Train your eye to answer questions such as, “Is it really art?” and “What makes it good?”

Thanks to the research and ingenuity of the people who lived during these times and headed these projects, we now have the things we need and use each day without any real thought. This class will discuss the history of great inventions and their impact on mankind.

Oriental Philosophy: Taoism, Buddhism, Zen Buddhism and Mahatma Gandhi

This series will focus first on an in-depth philosophical discussion of the main texts of Taoism: the Tao Te Ching and the Chuang-Tzu. It will then proceed to a similar in-depth philosophical discussion of the basic themes and issues associated with Buddhism and Zen Buddhism. Finally, this series is going to culminate in an intensive, critical exploration of Mahatma Gandhi and his highly influential notion of nonviolence.
